I have my father to thank for this, because in 1973 at a tender age, we moved to Caister On Sea, near Great Yarmouth. I was the the son of a holiday camp manager and wow ! did I enjoy those 70's summers.
I was on the mic calling bingo at twelve years old, always smitten by the 'Blue Coats' and entertainments team and visiting caberet, I just wanted to be part of it all.
So I quickly got myself involved, working sound & lights in the 1500 seater ballroom, 'Neptunes Palace', and at sixteen, with the help of my cousin, I had my 1st disco decks and in no time at all, I was in demand.
I was fortunate to land a summer season at the Florida Club in Hemsby, ok it was a kids disco 6 nights a week, but it was a brilliant grounding and a lesson in how to entertain kids.
Soon though, I was on the big stage in Neptunes Palace, Caister, 18+ weekends and the like, condensation, energy and funny smells !
I became mobile, working pubs and hotels and was offered a residency at a Great Yarmouth nightclub owned by Peter Jay, who had hits in the 60's with Peter Jay & the Jaywalkers, and from there my biggest break came.
A local entrepreneur and true gentleman Howard Platt, bought Tiffany's in Great Yarmouth, and through Martin Smith, a great friend and the General Manager at Tiffany's, I became the head of a vast team of DJ's, including Chrissie Jackson, Paul Allen, John Rodgers & Carl Castledine.
Suddenly I was working alongside some of the biggest names in the business, not only Radio 1 DJ's like Steve wright, Simon Bates, Simon Mayo, Gary Davies and TV celebrities such as Sam Fox, Stefan Dennis, Mike Reid, but some of the biggest international recording artistes of the day.
what a privilege to introduce on stage Rick Parfitt & Francis Rossi, Edwin Starr, The Real Thing, La Toya Jackson, and The Fatback Band to name but a few and I have been heard on Radio Broadland (Heart FM) and BBC Radio Norfolk and for a while the voice behind the speakers at Carrow Rd, the home of Norwich City Football Club.
I have a 'normal' day job too, as a manager with a 'global soft drinks giant' in Great Britain and I believe my qualities as a people manager and executive coach are all built around the foundations of working in the entertainment business.
Thanks Dad :o)
